The best vegetables for a hydroponic garden
Herbs get most of the attention, but a hydroponic garden grows vegetables beautifully too. After many grows in my QROOT, here are the vegetables that perform best indoors, ranked by how reliably they crop.
1. Lettuce
Lettuce is the number one hydroponic vegetable for a reason. It loves water-based growing, needs no fuss, and you can harvest outer leaves within a few weeks while the plant keeps producing. Loose-leaf and butterhead varieties do especially well under LED light.
2. Spinach and leafy greens
Spinach, arugula, and other leafy greens grow fast and let you pick as you go. They are perfect for daily salads and taste far better fresh than anything from a packet. Give them steady light and they crop for weeks.
3. Bok choy
Bok choy is an underrated hydroponic vegetable. It grows quickly, holds up well in a pod, and is ready to harvest in about four weeks. A great pick if you cook stir-fries.
4. Cherry tomatoes
Cherry tomatoes are the step-up crop. They need a taller lamp setting and a longer grow, but a healthy plant will give you sweet tomatoes right off the counter. Raise the light as the plant grows and shake the flowers gently to help them set fruit.
5. Chillies
Chillies do well hydroponically once established. They take patience, but a single plant keeps producing for months, which makes it worth the wait.
Tips for growing vegetables hydroponically
Give heavier feeders like tomatoes and chillies their own pods so they do not crowd the greens. Keep the tank filled with RO or filtered water, dose nutrients A and B at each refill, and raise the grow light as the plants get taller. Start with lettuce and greens to build confidence, then move on to fruiting vegetables.
With an indoor hydroponic garden you can grow fresh vegetables at home all year, no soil and no garden needed.
